09/10/2006: "UK Private Investigator Blog - "Trace an Email""

Email Tracing is limited in what it can do for an investigation. You can't trace an email back tot he person's home address, but you can trace it to their work, college, library if it was sent from there or find out the town it came from.

To start an email trace I'll need to email's header. This is sort of a list of codes each server adds to the email when it receives it and passes it on. Generally, an email has to pass through several severs to get from the sender to the receiver's inbox. The sender's I.P address can be found through this email trace investigation and that will point to their home town and country.

Their Internet Service Provider will also usually be found, and they obviously have records of who was using that I.P. address at the time and the person's home address. The down side is ISP's very rarely give out this information and you will have to get a lawyer to pursue the case.

I can arrange for an email trace investigation to be conducted for around $80. I'd give you details of how to obtain the email header, as it is usually hidden by email programs. You'd then email the contents of the header to the email trace investigator.
